Zombie Post

Don’t think that just because I’ve gone a ridiculously long time without posting that I have effectively killed the journal. On the contrary – topics for posting are quite formidable in number, I just haven’t had the time to properly type them out. You see, I’m a bit of a perfectionist, especially when it comes to things I write that essentially become public record, so at any given time I usually have half-a-dozen or so partially completed entries waiting in the wings.

As the summer dies down, I hope to purge myself of these so bear with me as I work to publish them in the coming weeks. Here is a short list of what to expect:

  • An essay on popular misconceptions of the PC tech and the associates pros and cons that come with them.
  • A roundup of book reviews for what I’ve been reading this summer.
  • Details on the new house, and possibly pictures (if you think I neglect this site, just wait till you see what my house looks like).
  • Updates on some projects of mine, including the much-discussed tech frat and a possible presentation for next year’s Notacon.
  • Musings on LAN parties and their cultural relevance (at least to me). Certain to include nostalgic rambling that may also evoke similar responses in other dullards.

So there you have it. If you’re still reading this, do be so kind as to post a reply – I like to occasionally poll to see who still hasn’t given up on reading this, and how often they check back (usually approximated by length of time between posting and response).

And because I’ve had these comments sticking out in my inbox for so long, let me get a few quick personal replies out in the open:

Joe: [Humorous expounding on the buying of houses with allusion to house-purchasing in the works] – Did you ever buy that house? And how do you like being clean-shaven?

Paul: ‘Like the ideas and congrats on the house! The hacker space thing sounds cool…. I wish I had more time to work on stuff. By the time I get home from work I’m usually to exhausted to work on fun stuff.‘ – I can relate – I spend much of my 9-5 life at work, and post-5PM life schooling in one form or another. This has stilted much of my progress with pet projects, but I haven’t lost any fervor for them. I just need to hope the associated parties interested don’t lost their passion in the meantime. How’s Royal Oak treating you?

Matt: ‘I’d like to offer a hand in getting the technical organization started. I don’t think I can lead the project (I have no idea what that would entail, but it’s probably more than I could handle), but I would definitely love to pitch in however I can. If you get enough other volunteers to get this off the ground, send me an e-mail at [e-mail]‘ – Thanks for keeping up to date on this. I’m glad you’re still interested, but at this time, leadership is precisely the lacking element in this project. Rest assured, I should have time to assume all those responsibilities myself, but it’ll likely not be till summer 2010. In the meantime, keep in touch, keep checking back, and don’t stop thinking about what you could do if…

To be continued…

    Still reading

Yes, I’m still reading this. And here’s a thought; have you ever considered an RSS feed for your blog?

Yes, I’m still reading this. And here’s a thought; have you ever considered an RSS feed for your blog?

I knew this would come up eventually.

My thoughts are that I really don’t think I’m important enough for an RSS feed. I don’t have a large enough following of readers that I think would actually use it to necessitate the implementation of RSS (non-difficult as it is).

Of course, if there was enough demand for one amongst other readers, I’d have to reconsider my stand on this.

Anyone else want to weigh in on the matter?

I bought the house, and I don’t think I could be more pleased. I truly enjoyed painting most of the rooms, and even enjoyed some parts of the dreaded wallpaper removal. The dining room had wallpaper in it so terrible that even Isaac Newton’s grandmother would have found it dated. I can and will talk at length about all facets of my house. Never in my life will I have enough time to finish half of the projects I have planned for this place. Hopefully on Friday-ish I will be able to start and finish one thing though. On the side of my house, there remains the stub of an old TV antenna, still anchored in the ground. With some angle iron I think I will make a folding clothes line from it, for hanging clothes to dry. I just took the time to find out what an RSS feed was. I don’t think it’s necessary. I just check back here every once in a while to see if there’s anything new. RSS strikes me as part of the normal evolution of human-technology interaction, though. We invented telephones and when those became too much effort to answer, we invented a machine to answer it for us. Nobody wants to watch Everybody Loves Raymond reruns, so now we have a VCR to watch it for us. Now those pesky websites are too much for us to visit, so we invented something to visit them for us. Douglas Adams’ Electric Monk is undoubtedly next.

I sure wish I had a machine to travel back in time and throw some HTML tags where I forgot to do so. But that would mean I’d have no cause to send it back, and would not, and the tags would remain missing, and I send the machine back, etc.

This is like that grandfather paradox, where I send a machine back to change my grandfather to my grandfather and I cease to exist.

I usually check this blog at least once a month on average.

As I recall, you were studying Japanese. Have you ever read any books by Haruki Murakami?

Nice…is the new house in Toledo, or is it somewhere surrounding (Sylvania, Michigan, et al)? And if you’re going to suggest the Wind-up Bird Chronicle to me, then you’ll have to get in line as like the sixth person to do so. I’ve been meaning to read it for years now, just haven’t gotten around to it. I hear many good things. I’m taking it that you’re a Murakami fan?

        nah

I can’t say I’m a fan of him, yet. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle was significant for proving to me that crucial difference between outlaws and in-laws: outlaws are wanted. I didn’t really understand the book, but it certainly compelled me to continue reading. Kafka on the Shore (hereafter abbreviated WTF)is absolutely impenetrable to me, but it also compelled me to continue reading. I’m now reading Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. I think I know what’s going on here, so I’m probably wrong.

One interesting thing about his characters is that they seem to just go with the flow and do not assert themselves at all. In WTF the main character actually appears to act (i.e. he sleeps with his mother and apparently his sister) but in each case he feels pulled to do so by a prophecy his father made. In Hard-Boiled, the main character just watches as intruders completely trash his apartment. At one point he grabs a beer to watch with detached bemusement.

WRT the house I’m about two miles north of the only mall that matters, just off of Talmadge. I am continuously dumbfounded by how convenient life is here in the city. I grew up 30 min from everything. Now I’m 2 min from the Store of the Sons of Ander.

    Going well

I’ve been going to the gym a few times a week trying to throw on some weight and muscle, seems to be working well. The city is going alright, I don’t get to enjoy all the fun things this city has to offer… but I’m doing well!

What kind of workout do you do at the gym? I’m glad to hear you’re doing well up North. You should come to one of our LAN parties sometime…
